可回收垃圾，主要指適宜回收利用的生活垃圾，又細分為紙類、塑料、金屬、玻璃和織物。
廚余垃圾，指易腐爛的、含有有機質的生活垃圾，根據來源又可分為餐廚垃圾（來自餐飲業、食堂、酒店）、家庭廚余垃圾（來自居民家庭生活）和其他廚余垃圾。
有害垃圾，指《國家危險廢物名錄》中的家庭源危險廢物，主要包括燈管、電池、家用化學品等。
其他垃圾，指除可回收物、有害垃圾、廚余垃圾以外的生活垃圾，包括竹木、磚瓦、陶瓷和渣土等。
